Sunanda Kane, MD, is Associate Professor of Medicine at the Miles and Shirley Fitterman Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Mayo Clinic College of Medicine Rochester, MN. Dr. Kane also holds a Masters degree in Biostatistics and Epidemiology; her Masters thesis was on the lack of association between oral contraceptives and the development of Crohn’s disease.
Dr. Kane’s areas of interest include gender-specific issues in gastroenterology and medication adherence. Her published work includes risk factors for non-adherence, the effect of non-adherence on long-term outcomes in quiescent ulcerative colitis, a pilot trial of once daily mesalamine for maintenance and now newer technologies in the tracking of non-adherence.
Dr. Kane has received funding from the American College of Gastroenterology to study anti-metabolite levels in breast milk, and has presented work on the effect of HLA disparity on IBD course, the relationship between the menstrual cycle and IBD, the effect of breastfeeding on IBD outcomes and the association between immunomodulators and cervical dysplasia.
In addition, she is active in many professional organizations, has contributed numerous reviews and book chapters to the medical literature along with over 30 papers of original research. She has edited a pocket guide to the management of IBD, and she serves as Past President of WE CARE in IBD, an organization for the development and education of women in the field of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Dr. Kane is also the current Chair of the Women’s Committee of the American College of Gastroenterology.
